Free Browser Voice Recorder — Record and Download Audio — WriteHook
WriteHook

Free Browser Voice Recorder

Record vocals, melody ideas, or rough demos directly in your browser. Preview the recording, then download it to your device. Nothing is uploaded or saved anywhere — just quick, private idea capture.

Try it

Your browser doesn't support audio recording. Try Chrome or Firefox.

When to use this

  • When a melody idea comes to you and you need to capture it before it disappears
  • When you want to hear back a chord progression or vocal line without opening a DAW
  • When you're sketching lyrics and want to try singing them before committing to paper
  • When you need to send someone a quick voice note of an idea without an account or app

How the recorder works

Click Start Recording and your browser will ask for microphone permission. Allow it, and recording begins immediately — the timer starts counting. When you're done, click Stop Recording. You can preview the audio directly in the page before downloading.

The recording stays entirely in your browser's memory. Nothing is uploaded to any server. When you click Download, the file saves to your device in whatever audio format your browser uses (typically WebM on Chrome and Firefox, MP4 on Safari). These formats play in all standard media players and import cleanly into DAWs.

This recorder is intentionally minimal — it captures audio and lets you download it. For anything more — cloud storage, organized playback, recordings saved per song, multi-device access — use the WriteHook app. The app's recorder works the same way underneath, but stores everything to your account automatically.

On mobile: Chrome for Android works well. iPhone Safari has limitations with Web Audio recording — if it doesn't start, try a different browser or use the WriteHook iOS app which has a native recording path that handles Safari's restrictions.

Common questions

Do my recordings get uploaded anywhere?

No. This tool records entirely in your browser — nothing leaves your device unless you click Download. For cloud storage, the full WriteHook app saves recordings to your account and lets you access them from any device.

What file format does it record in?

The tool uses the best format your browser supports — typically WebM with Opus audio on Chrome and Firefox, or MP4 on Safari. All of these play in standard media players and import into DAWs like GarageBand, Logic, or Audacity.

Why is the browser asking for microphone permission?

Recording audio requires microphone access. You'll be prompted once by your browser when you click Start Recording. If you decline, the recorder won't work — allow mic access in your browser settings and try again.

How long can I record?

There's no fixed time limit — you can record as long as your browser and device memory allow. Most browsers handle at least 30–60 minutes comfortably. For very long sessions, use the full app which handles storage more robustly.

Can I record on my phone?

Yes, on Android Chrome and most modern browsers. iPhone Safari has limited Web Audio support — if recording doesn't start, try Chrome for iOS or use the WriteHook app which has a native iOS recording path.
